For years, many believed that proximity keys couldn’t be programmed on pre-2011 Mercedes E-Class models. “It won’t work on older Benz EIS systems,” they said. But with a bit of curiosity and the right tools, we proved them wrong. Using the Xhorse VVDI Key Tool Plus and an Xhorse Universal Proximity Key, we successfully programmed a 2010 Mercedes E350 smart key with full functionality — all in under 20 minutes.
Choosing the Right File
When selecting the file version, the VVDI Key Tool Plus offers three options: 51, 41, or 11.
Many online sources recommend version 51, but that option disabled the proximity feature in previous tests. After some research and a useful tip from another locksmith, we tried Version 41 — paired with the VVDI BE Key Pro — and it worked perfectly!
Smooth Programming Process
Because there was already a working key, no EIS removal or dismantling was required.
Steps followed:
- Entered the Key Wizard in VVDI Key Tool Plus.
- Used one-line password calculation.
- Programmed the key — completed in 20 minutes flat.
The VVDI BE Key programmed flawlessly, and there was no need for additional button synchronization.
Strange but Normal Remote Behavior
During testing, we noticed something interesting: after starting the car and turning it off, the remote buttons would temporarily stop working — until we opened and closed the door.
We confirmed this behavior on both the original key and the Xhorse Universal Proximity Key, so it’s not a bug — it’s a built-in Mercedes feature.
Final Verdict
If you’re hesitant about older Benzes: Don’t be! Xhorse VVDI Key Tool Plus works great.
Just remember: Use File Version 41. Set frequency to 315.
