To begin the process, connect the Xhorse VVDI Key Tool Plus to the vehicle’s OBD-II port and perform an automatic identification of the instrument cluster. This module stores all immobilizer data, so recognizing it correctly is essential.

During detection, Key Tool Plus displays several important parameters:
– the instrument cluster type with its hardware and software versions,
– the VIN number,
– the processor type inside the cluster,
– and a notification indicating whether the immobilizer data can be read by removing and opening the cluster.
In our case, offline reading is possible.
Next, we attempt to read the immobilizer data directly through the OBD-II connector.

This leads us to the first major challenge when working with MQB-platform vehicles:
Some instrument clusters use a protected processor that cannot be read via OBD.
When this happens, professional technicians typically rely on one of two approaches:
- Remove the instrument cluster, open it, and read the immobilizer data by soldering a special wiring harness (or using a solder-free adapter, depending on the cluster variant);
- Read the data from an existing working key by opening the key and extracting the required information — understanding that not every key type supports this method.
We choose the second solution. Opening the key and rebuilding it leaves no noticeable difference, and even in the worst case, the shell can be easily replaced.
Using the VVDI MLB Tool MQB48 adapter, we make a small modification to the key PCB and begin the immobilizer data extraction process. After the read is successful, the key is reassembled, and we continue with preparing and adding the new key.

The mechanical key blade is then cut using a high-precision Xhorse Dolphin XP005 CNC machine for a perfect fit.

In the end, the new key is successfully programmed to the 2018 Skoda Kodiaq. The vehicle can now be accessed and started without any issues.
Important Note
If the vehicle was produced after 2020, there is a high chance the key uses the MQB49 chip. This can only be confirmed during inspection. At the moment, no working programming solution exists for MQB49 keys.
