Question:
I’m trying to program an Xhorse key for a VW Golf 8 MQB49 5D, but key generation fails. Xhorse advised me to use an Xhorse XM38 Remote or BMW F Series XM38 remote, but neither works. The XM38 shows: “Need contact support, need update” even though my tool is fully updated.
Answer:
The universal XM38 remote cannot currently be used to generate VAG 5D keys.
✅ Use a BMW F Series XM38 remote instead and remove the PCB from the shell before generating the key.
If key generation still fails, use an OEM 5D key.
⚠️ If the vehicle’s original key has UWB (Ultra-Wideband) functionality, only an OEM 5D key will work correctly.
Summary:
- Universal XM38 remote = Not supported for VAG 5D
- BMW F Series XM38 remote = Recommended
- Remove PCB and generate again
- OEM 5D key = Best fallback solution
- UWB vehicles require OEM 5D keys
